ABOUT AUSTRALIA: Australia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the world's smallest continent and a number of islands in the Southern Indian and Pacific Oceans. Australia’s capital city is Canberra, although the current national population of around 20.6 million is concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. By far the largest part of Australia is desert or semi-arid. Australia is the driest inhabited continent, the flattest, and has the oldest and least fertile soils. Only the south-east and south-west corners of the continent have a temperate climate. The northern part of the country, with a tropical climate, has vegetation consisting of rainforest, woodland, grassland, mangrove swamps and desert. Although most of Australia is semi-arid or desert, the country still has a diverse range of habitats, from alpine ranges to tropical rainforests. In large part because of Australia’s geographic isolation, much of the country’s plant and animal is unique to Australia. Examples of some of the unique animal species include the kangaroo, koala, wombat and emu. Australia has a prosperous, Western-style mixed economy, with a per capita GDP slightly higher than the UK, Germany and France. Australia is world renowned for its natural wonders and wide open spaces (beaches (namely the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast), deserts and "the bush" or "the Outback"). Australia also is one of the world's most highly urbanized countries and is well known for the cosmopolitan attractions of its globally significant cities, such as Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Canberra.
